Best known for her appearance on the 2018 series of Love Island, Megan Barton-Hanson is an Essex-born TV personality who's gained a dedicated following of over 1.5 million on Instagram for her candid approach to sexuality, sex, body positivity and female empowerment. This past March she launched her first-ever column on VICE UK Magazine where she dives into everything from how to handle slut-shaming to advice for starting therapy — all with a relatable, upfront and shame-free sincerity. She also started her very own podcast, You Come First, which aims to encourage women to put themselves first — whether it's in a relationship, the bedroom or career-wise.
Smashing taboos and encouraging people to reclaim their own personal power is at the core of everything Megan does, so we were bloody thrilled to catch up with Megan to openly discuss all-things period related — from her favorite menstrual products to a handy period trick she uses to curb cramps.
First up: can you tell us about your period toolkit? What mix of products do you generally use?
When I’m on my period, I tend to live life at a slower pace... pads and big pants have always been my go-to, but period pants have been a game-changer for me. Reusable sanitary products are the future.
Do you have any period rituals or hacks?
I know this is a bit of a weird one and is probably the last thing you want to do when you’re in pain, but doing a few crunches/ sit-ups when you have cramps actually really helps. The contracting of the muscles as you do them helps relax your tummy muscles! I also always keep a hot water bottle on the go!
What are your thoughts on period sex? And do you have any tips to help bleeders who may not fully feel comfortable, but are curious to try period sex with a partner?
I think it is totally up to the couple - just like any shared sexual experience, an honest open conversation is all it takes and consent is of paramount importance. You just need to respect your partner’s decision.
What's your favourite thing about the ohne period pants?
The pastel colours are so cute and they eliminate the nappy-look that comes with a big sanitary towel – I actually feel sexy in them!
What's your favourite style/colour combo from the og collection?
In one word, what do ohne period pants feel like?
Marshmallows – so soft and light!
What's your period persona (it can be anything — a cartoon character, celebrity...you name it)?
Brandi Glanville from the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills – sassier than usual, but cute!
What's your current anthem (what song or album do you have on repeat to make yourself feel good)?
What's your favourite form of self-care?
I never feel better after a night in having a warm shower, hair mask, doing my skincare routine, and moisturising my body. I wake up a new woman!
Do you have a mantra or affirmation that keeps you grounded?
I think the best one I’ve heard is ‘if it’s meant to be, it will be.’ I have realised that in life, even negative experiences teach us something, and often when I have missed out on something I really wanted, something better always comes along that is more suited to me. I believe everything happens for a reason and this helps me feel less pressure in my day-to-day life.
What's your go-to period snack?
I either do not feel like eating anything at all, or I can cane through a whole bar of chocolate like it’s nobody’s business (!)
Last but not least, when do you feel your most fantastic?
When I am looking after myself, keeping on top of my health and working hard! Women have been conditioned to look after everyone else first, and themselves last, but I think I am a better friend, daughter, and woman when I am looking after my needs first. I have also recently had such fantastic feedback from people regarding my VICE column and You Come First podcast, so connecting with people in my DMs and hearing I have helped them accept who they are is when I feel my best.
