Slaying your period: with the Chronic Iconic
There’s no other way to put it: Jess is an all-around badass. A disability advocate, artist and fashion icon, Jess’s goal is to destigmatise and debunk antiquated beliefs around disability and draw attention to the inequalities we continue to face in society. If you aren’t already following her on Instagram @thechroniciconic, do yourself a favor and let her brilliance shake up your feed. We had the absolute pleasure of chatting with jess about her period rituals, why she’s loving our latest period pants and the most hilarious period persona we’ve heard to date. Enjoy, babes!

Tell us about your period toolkit, what mix of products do you use?

My period toolkit consists of my electric heated pad, painkillers and my TENS machine. I tend to use reusable pads and period pants during my period. I rarely use tampons as I find them uncomfortable.

What's your favourite style/colour combo from the og collection?

I love the high waisted line! Anything high waisted makes me feel so good. I particularly love the orange and lilac period pants – it’s amazing to see products that look like ordinary pants and have such a soft material. they’re comfy and they look great!

In one word, what do ohne period pants feel like?

Silky.

What's your favourite thing about the ohne period pants?

Honestly the fabric, I have never EVER found period pants made of something so soft. I am really irritated by most materials so it often rules out a lot of underwear choices. To find something that genuinely is softer than most of my non-period pants is amazing. I’ve actually ended up wearing them off of my period too for this reason!

Do you have any period rituals or hacks?

Baths with Epsom salts, I have a  hot water bottle that I can strap to my torso which makes life so much easier, it’s also one that self-heats using a plug which means I don’t have to get up to the kettle. As my periods are SO painful and heavy, I always ensure that I get more rest at this time and tend to take some time off work.

What's your current anthem (what song or album do you have on repeat)?

25 by The Pretty Reckless. can’t stop listening to it no matter how hard I try!

What's your period persona (it can be anything — a cartoon character, celebrity, gif, anything)?

Hmm this is hard, haven’t ever thought of this! someone dark and dramatic, probably Moaning Myrtle from Harry Potter!

What's your go-to period snack?

Generic I know, but chocolate. cadburys brought out a vegan dairy milk with salted caramel and I always keep one at hand for when my period strikes.

Do you have a mantra or affirmation that keeps you grounded?

“Live out of spite”- I always say this to myself in times when life throws a lot at me. It holds a lot of power in countless ways. As a Jewish Disabled woman, being alive is a rebellion and I remind myself of this often.

When do you feel most fantastic?

Probably when I’m all made up and wearing spectacular lingerie. It’s easy to forget your power and worth (especially during my period when my mood dips!) often I find when dressing up in something that makes me feel inherently sexy and confident can connect me with the empowered, sassy and confident temptress within!
